My work at Arizona State University has provided me with the opportunity to work with Africanized honey bees (AHB) and to learn about their colony structure and defensive mechanisms.  Most feral colonies and a large number of managed colonies show some signs of AHB influence.  Coming from Ohio where it is unusual to see honey bees foraging unless you are in the vicinity of a beekeeper, I was surprised to find how common it is in Arizona to see honey bees foraging everywhere.  However, most of the foraging bees I observed in Arizona are likely AHB.
