What's New?

2010 Instrumental Insemination Training Course - I am pleased to offer a training course scheduled for September 8th -10th, 2009.  For Further information please use the following link - II Training Course Info

Survivor Drone Project - With the development of the Latshaw Micro Instrument and Semen Homogenizing Syringe, I had the necessary tools to developed the Survivor Drone Project, an effort to collect drones from across the US in an effort to quickly and efficiently redistribute genetic material.  Beekeepers from across the US agreed to ship drones from their toughest colonies to be included in the project in exchange for daughter queens from the "Super-Mated" queens.  Such genetic diversity provides the raw selection materials for beekeepers to develop their own lines.

SARE Grant Received - As part of my ongoing development for locally sustainable practices, I submitted a small grant proposal to evaluate the use of 5-frame polystyrene nucleus hives as overwintered replacements for lost production colonies.  I received notification that my proposal was accepted for funding and will provide updates as the season progresses (Project Number FNC08-700) UPDATES

Latshaw Micro Instrument

2009 was an exciting year!  First, I developed a completely new instrumental insemination apparatus and semen homogenizing syringe which I named the Latshaw Micro Instrument and the Latshaw Micro Syringe.  This innovative instrument and syringe represent many new design features.  The Latshaw Micro Instrument is a highly simplified instrument design developed with the Microbreeder in mind.  It is very economical, with a price of only $785.00US plus shipping.  I worked very diligently to develop an instrument that was more affordable to breeders interested in using instrumental insemination in their breeding programs.  A second innovative feature includes the Latshaw Micro Syringe.  This large capacity syringe is designed to homogenize honey bee semen within the body of the syringe.  Genetic diversity is extremely important within the honey bee mating strategy.  Until the design of the Latshaw Micro Syringe, the use of homogenized honey bee semen was difficult for most breeder to utilize.  Now, collecting and homogenizing honey bee semen is a one-step process!

In addition, I continue to expand and develop my lines of Aurea (Italian) and Karnica (Carniolan).  My work with developing the new Latshaw Micro Instrument directly benefits my breeding and selection work with the Aurea and Karnica lines.  I am constantly striving to improve my honey bee selection and breeding efforts and sometimes that necessitates the development of new equipment.
