What's New?

Some of the latest projects that I have been working on are the expansion of Aurea and Karnica lines through the use of mixed/homogenized semen techniques to ensure greater genetic diversity within the breeding program.  In addition, I have received some inquiries for naturally mated queens produced from my stock.  I do have companies I work with listed on this site that offer naturally mated production queens for sale.  However, I will be offering a limited number naturally mated queens for the 2008 season as time allows.  Please contact me if you have an interest in purchasing naturally mated production queens for this up-coming year.  Please keep in mind, queens produced in Ohio will not be available until early to mid-June, depending on the weather.  I will still continue to focus my production efforts on high quality instrumentally inseminated breeder queens.  However, I started out in beekeeping raising naturally mated queens and it has been a part of beekeeping I would like to get back to.

Another large project for the 2007 season has been the establishment and development of the Ohio Queen Project (OQP).  The OQP was initially developed by the Ohio State Beekeepers Association and Dana Stahlman.  This program is a really dynamic and useful asset for beekeepers.  It has two main objectives.  The first object is to offer training in the art of queen rearing, which we have done and will continue to do.  The second main object, which is where I fit into the scheme of things, is to develop a state wide breeding program.  I was asked to design a working plan for a large scale breeding program.  This year, nine regional coordinators from across the state of Ohio assembled a diverse collection of exceptional stock that will serve as the foundation for our program.  For additional information regarding the OQP, please visit the OSBA's website at http://www.ohiostatebeekeepers.org/index.html and follow the links to the queen rearing project.  Also, there is a nice article that appeared in the March issue of Bee Culture magazine that discusses more details about the OQP.
