Semen Collection Once you have perfected the technique of drone preparation, you are ready to begin semen collection. This too requires some practice, but is not difficult as long as you remember the basics. Know the difference between semen and mucus and always keep the tip moist. If you collect mucus or allow the tip to dry out both mistakes will result in a clogged tip, which is of little use.
The semen is a light tan color with some marbling to it. It does not appear as a solid color. Semen floats on a bed of white mucus. Keep in mind, there is a definite difference between the mucus and the semen. When collecting semen, expel a small drop of previously collected semen from the tip, prior to making contact with the new drone. The expelled semen will form a contact between the tip and the semen on the new drone, so that you do not have to insert the tip into the pool of semen. Remember, the semen is floating on a bed of mucus and if you insert the tip, you are likely to insert the tip into the mucus, which will clog the tip.
After expelling a small amount of previously collected semen, gently make contact. The previously collected semen will form a contact with the new semen and allow you to collect the new semen from the bed of mucus. The mucus and the semen are not mixed, and will separate readily from each other. If you have difficulty, it is better to discard the drone and try again rather than making several attempts on the same drone. |
